Behold the ‘glueball,’ a strange new form of matter

Collider in China forges elusive particle, made of force-carrying gluons

Note: Matter is like a Russian doll. Molecules are made of atoms, atoms of electrons and nuclei, and nuclei of protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons, in turn, consist of quarks held together by a swarm of gluons. A glueball would be different: a particle whose mass comes almost entirely from gluons bound to one another, with little or no quark content.

The seven hour explosion nobody could explain

Gamma-ray bursts are the most violent explosions in the universe. In a fraction of a second, they can release more energy than the sun will emit across its entire 10-billion-year lifetime. Most are over before you've had time to register them, gone in seconds, minutes at most…

Classical Thermodynamics and Economics – Yuxi on the Wired

How to think like a classical thermodynamic-economist, delivered with many illustrations and some sci-fi metaphors. Particular emphasis on what traditional pedagogy gets wrong. Prerequisites: multivariate calculus and mathematical maturity.

The essay contains: three laws of thermodynamics, entropy, Helmholtz and Gibbs free energy, nonextensive entropy, Caratheodory’s axiomatic thermodynamics, Vladimir Arnold’s contact-geometric thermodynamics, Paul Samuelson’s area-ratio thermodynamics, Le Chatelier’s principle, chemical equilibrium…

Physicists magnetize a material with light

MIT physicists created a long-lasting magnetic state in a material, using only light. The results provide a new way to control and switch antiferromagnetic materials, which are of interest for their potential to advance information processing and memory chip technology.
